Located between the islands of Koh Tao and Koh Phangan, this impressive offshore pinnacle rises dramatically from depths of around 40 meters to just a few meters below the surface. Its isolated position in open water allows nutrient-rich currents to flow around the rock, creating ideal conditions for a wide variety of marine life and making it a major attraction for divers in Thailand.

The dive site is characterized by steep rock walls, coral-covered ledges, and small crevices that provide shelter for many reef species. Divers commonly encounter large schools of trevally, barracuda, fusiliers, and batfish circling the pinnacle, while angelfish, butterflyfish, and groupers inhabit the reef areas. One of the most distinctive features of Sail Rock is the vertical “chimney,” a natural swim-through that begins at about 18 meters and exits at approximately 6 meters, offering an exciting and memorable experience for divers exploring the site.

Sail Rock is also well known for seasonal encounters with the Whale Shark, the largest fish in the ocean. These gentle giants occasionally visit the site to feed on plankton, attracting divers from around the world who hope to witness this remarkable species. Although sightings are not guaranteed, the possibility of encountering a whale shark—combined with the site’s rich biodiversity and dramatic underwater topography—makes Sail Rock one of the most iconic dive sites in the Gulf of Thailand.

Location

9.86511,99.9174046; WXVR+X2M Sail Rock; Get Directions

Sail Rock is one of the most famous and highly regarded dive sites in the Gulf of Thailand.
